CFO Matthew Hardill talks business rules, ties and Yorkshire

The Yorkshire Times 10 in 10 have recently featured Matthew Hardill, our chief finance officer for his answers to their 10 burning questions.

This is what Matthew had to say:

  1. What does a typical working day for you involve?

It usually begins at home checking new emails and then, depending on where we are in the month, my working day will always involve having meetings, working on internal processes, pulling together reports and liaising with the bank, customers and suppliers. I usually get home for 6.30pm where I either catch up with the family or carry out some form of exercise – whether that be five-a-side football or running.

  1. What makes your company special?

We’re a family-owned business and that makes us such a close-knit team. Having strong ties – and everyone understanding the direction of the organisation – means we all really trust each other’s decisions, and I feel like we’re unique to other organisations because of these factors.

  1. Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

I always take lots of notes, especially in meetings. It’s proved so crucial when referring to outstanding actions and sorting the next steps. It’s also helped to understand who does what, and when – so deadlines are met.

Another rule I swear by is to ask my direct reports for completion dates on tasks and projects. That way, it’s up to the individual to manage their time to ensure duties are achieved based on a deadline they set, rather than what I did.

  1. Do you dress up or down for work?

I dress down for work – I don’t think I’ve worn a tie in about 15 years! In our sector, it’s important to look professional but feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.

  1. What piece of advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

I have a few! One is ‘don’t be afraid to make mistakes’ because – looking back – I would’ve liked to have had a motto of ‘try, fail but learn’.

Secondly, I’d say always put yourself forward, go that extra mile and show you’ve got a good work ethic.

And, finally, I’d tell myself to read more self-improvement books to help with my development.

  1. What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?

As a Huddersfield Town season ticket holder, I’d have to say the John Smith’s Stadium.

  1. How do you prefer to travel for business?

In the car, unless I’m going to London and then I’ll get on the train.

  1. What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?

My idea of relaxing is having a family day outdoors, enjoying the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. I love spending time running around like a big kid at Brimham Rocks, in particular!

  1. Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?

I always remember going to The Three Acres in Shelley a few years ago. I had brown bread ice cream for the first time. It was a wonderful creation – that surprised me then – and still brings back fond memories.

  1. What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you are away?

Proper fish and chips! They just don’t taste the same as eating them sat with the seagulls in Whitby!
